Cartoon Infographics (Cartoonfographics)

Cartoonfographics − in other words, infographics that include cartoonlike illustrations − are awesome for illustrating processes, systems and information of any kind that include a human element. Cartoons add warmth, humour and details to otherwise rather cold visual displays of information.

Sure, process charts and computer generated infographics can be useful in all kinds of situations. But, when you want to show how humans fit into processes, interact with technology are are relevant do data, then an infographic including cartoon figures is an excellent way to go. It makes a huge difference

Likewise, abstract processes can often be rendered as mechanical processes (as in the the example above), making them far easier for the non-expert to grasp.

A Personal Story

I discovered this some years ago when I was employed as an e-business consultant in a communications company. My employer was given the opportunity to bid on a major technology project for a car manufacturer that had been a client for ages. We knew that other companies were also bidding and that some of them were strong in technology. However, my employer had enjoyed a long relationship with the car manufacturer and even had employees working in the client's factories.

After an elimination round, only my employer and a tech company remained. We were given a final opportunity to give a presentation to argue our case and it was my show. I took a look at the process chart for our proposed solution, crumpled it up and redrew it as a cartoon with pictures of people interacting with the technical solution. It made it abundantly clear that my employer's long relationship with the client, our employees working for the client and our understanding of the human side of the client's operations were all critical factors in the best solution.

My employer won the contract, worth millions of Euro.

Multimedia

A cartoonfographic can be used on a web page, in a book, in a powerpoint presentation on a poster and even on t-shirts.
